The NBA Show #028 (MP3 - 8.7MB - 25min 25sec)

Okay, so Dallas’ defense is even better than we thought. We labelled them soft and an astute listener called us on it. Adam has done the research and discovered that the Maverick’s are much tougher on D than we gave them credit for. Kudos to the intelligent listeners of The NBA Show (and thanks for the great comments!).
Are the Miami Heat a legitimate contender for the Eastern Conference Title? If this this week’s matchup between the Detroit Pistons, the reigning Eastern Champs, and the Heat is any indication, the Heat’s chances are mighty good. The Pistons won the game, but Miami proved that a Detroit - Miami playoff series will be a serious slug-fest.
The Mailman made his final delivery to the Delta Center in Salt Lake City this week. Karl Malone returned to Utah to have his #32 retired. We take a look back at a career that began with few expectations and will certainly end in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
After a week of speculation and doubt Amare Stoudemire returned to the court for the Phoenix Suns. What a return it was! What does the return of the Suns’ big man mean for the Western Conference playoff picture?
Half of the NCAA Final Four has been set. Congratulations to the LSU Tigers and the UCLA Bruins. Our brackets were blown away some time ago. Can anyone accurately predict March Madness? Adam Morrison of Gonzaga and Duke’s J.J. Reddick are two of this year’s top collegiate stars. What do their futures hold?
In this week’s Hoopie Awards Adam rewards a former Seattle Sonic for trading his bong for a basketball. And Steve bestows an award on Andrei Kirilenko for getting a triple-double in an unconventional way.
James, we missed you this week. Feel better soon!
Thanks for listening!
Steve
ps from Adam: Isn’t it funny what difference a week makes? In the few days it took me to get this show ready to post, Amare’s back on the bench, and for the first time ever, no #1 seeds are in the Final Four and a double digit seed is in.

March Madness is in full swing. Are your brackets busted yet? What is it that makes the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament one of the greatest spectacles in sport? The NBA Show boys take you through the upsets, scares and surprises of the first two rounds.
Two’s company. Three’s a crowd. Just ask the New York Knicks! Coach Larry Brown and guard Stephon “Starbury” Marburry are taking verbal jabs at one another in the media again and no one is sure what Isaiah Thomas is up to. Is there any hope that New York’s troubled trio will make peace? If not, who stays and who goes?
As the NBA enters its final run for the playoffs Adam, James and I ask if there are any legitimate contenders capable of overtaking the Spurs and Pistons? Did the Heat’s coaching change and off-season personnel moves put them in position to take the East? What about in the West? Do Avery Johnson’s Mavericks have a chance to knock out their in-state rivals, the Spurs? What about the Phoenix Suns? They are playing superb basketball and still expect to have Amare Stoudemire back before the playoffs.
You can bet its going to be an exciting run!
Thanks for listening and enjoy the show!

Jason McElwain. Chances are you’ve heard the name recently. You’ve probably even heard a little about his story. He is the basketball team manager and a senior at Greece Athena High School in Rochester, New York. He also happens to be autistic. Not long ago, Coach Jim Johnson decided to let Jason suit up for the team’s final home game. With four minutes left in the game, Coach Johnson decided to let Jason play. The rest is straight out of the movies! Coach Johnson was kind enough to spend some time this week chatting with the hosts of The NBA Show and we’ve got the interview here! This is one of the greatest sports stories ever.
USA Basketball has released its 25-man preliminary roster and one very prominent name is missing. Why did Allen Iverson get snubbed? After some very disapointing outtings in recent years can Jerry Colangelo put together a team equipped to take on the world?
The NBA has its share of drama, as well. The Spurs’ Robert Horry takes a bite out of the Mavericks’ Jerry Stackhouse and the Timberwolves’ Kevin Garnett doesn’t look happy.
Congratulations to Coach Johnson, Jason McElwain and the entire Greece Athena Boys’ Basketball team for winning the Section V, Class AA Championship! Best of luck to Greece Athena in the Class A State Qualifier!
A very special Thank You to Coach Jim Johnson for taking the time to speak with The NBA Show while his team was preparing for a playoff game. Through all hype and publicity surrounding Jason’s achievements Coach Johnson has managed to remind us all what it is truly great about sport. Much thanks, coach.

Adam wears ribbons in his hair! Adam wears ribbons in his hair!
The NBA Show guys are back from the All-Star break with their take on the NBA’s weekend showcase. A 7-footer wins the 3-point shootout. A 5′7″ little man wins the dunk contest. What’s next, cats and dogs playing nicely? Was this the best dunk contest since Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan squared off? What works and what can be done to improve the All-Star events?
The NBA trade deadline is February 23rd. The trade action is heating up and the rumor mill is in high gear. The New York Knicks add a “Franchise” player by aquiring Steve Francis from the Orlando Magic. Which teams should you be watching as the deadline nears? Adam tips us off to potential 3-team deal between the Seattle Supersonics, Utah Jazz and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Of course, there are Hoopie Awards and plenty of the wit and insight you count on from the leaders in NBA podcasts.
Oh, and Adam does NOT wear ribbons in his hair.
Enjoy!
Steve
ps from Adam: ok, so less than 24 hours after we record, Seattle is involved in a 3 team trade, but not with the two teams we heard about. Also, I don’t wear ribbons in my hair. Or chase boys.

24… When it comes to drama, excitement and intrigue, Kiefer Sutherland has got nothin’ on the NBA!
The trade deadline is a little over a month away. The rumors are flying and some big deals went down this week. The Minnesota Timberwolves gave the Boston Celtics a couple of guys whose names are too hard to spell (Wally Szczerbiak and Michael Olowakandi) for Ricky Davis and Mark Blount. The Raptors and Knicks swapped Jalen Rose for the embattled Antonio Davis. What are the implications? James, Adam and I will let you know!
The 2006 NBA All-Star Weekend is just around the corner. The starters have been announced. How did your favorite players come out in the fan voting? Resevers will be named by the coached on Thursday. Is the selection system fair? Does it work? We’ll take a look. And, don’t forget All-Star Saturday with the Dunk Contest, 3-Point Shootout and Skills Challenge! All three champs from last year are returning to defend their titles. Does the Knicks’ Nate Robinson have a chance? He’s only 5′9″!
Hoopie Awards go to a Phoenix Sun that earned his first triple-double, The Miami Heat for a classic highlight reel and the San Antonio Spurs’ Tony Parker. He’s having a phenomenal season, but how does Eva Longoria fit into it? Tune in and find out.
This is excitement, drama and passion at its finest! Listen in! You’ll be glad you did.
Steve
ps from Adam: yeah, it took me over a week to get this show out. Sorry, it’s been one of those weeks. I’ve been grieving about the end of the Seahawks season.

The NBA Show Episode #23 - Not sure its worthy of retiring along with Michael Jordan’s #23, but a damn fine show, nonetheless!
Ron Artest is a King! A Sacramento King. That means Peja Stojakovic is now a Pacer. After providing more drama than an entire season of Desperate Housewives the deal is, at last, done. Who came out the winners? Artest? Peja? The Kings or the Pacers? Adam, James and Steve share their views. Tell us who you think came out ahead.
Kobe Bryant treats basketball fans to an unforgettable night scoring 81 points and leading the Los Angeles Lakers back from an 18 point deficit to triumph over the Toronto Raptors. Only Wilt Chamberlain has scored more points in a game when he scored 100 in 1962. The NBA Show posse asks who’s achievement was more difficult? Can Kobe match Wilt’s 100? Can anyone?
We dubbed the 2005 NBA Draft “The Year of the Point Guard”. Point men were taken with the #3, #4 and #5 picks. Nearly halfway through the season, how are Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Raymond Felton stacking up?
This week’s Hoopie Awards acknowledge New Jersey’s Vince Carter for thinking of the children, a Chicago fan for making a good choice and The Seattle Supersonics for coming out on top against the Phoenix Suns in a double overtime shootout.
Thanks for making The NBA Show one of the top sports podcasts anywhere!
Steve

Episode Twenty-two. The NBA Show rollin’ with the deuce-deuce!
Its been a week chock-full of suspensions in the NBA. First, the Orlando Magic’s Steve Francis gets himself a three game grounding for “Conduct detrimental to the team.” He later had it reduced to two games, but is Stevie Franchise still hoping to abandon O-Town?
Then the New York Knicks’ Antonio Davis entered the stands at Chicago’s United Center to protect his wife during a game against the Chicago Bulls. The league saw fit to suspend Davis for five games. Is that too harsh a penalty for a guy trying to protect his wife? Anyone else have flashbacks to that dreadful night in Detroit when the Pistons and Pacers left us all in shock?
You asked the questions. Now James, Adam and Steve are going to answer those questions. Who’s better, Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves or the San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan?
Does Allen Iverson have an attitude problem? Find out what the NBA Show boys have to say about “The Answer.”
And of course, Hoopie Awards for deserving recipients like a University of Washington Lady Husky basketball player who wouldn’t let a defective heart stop her from playing the game she loves.
Shareef Abdur-Rahim earns a Hoopie for being a tough guy, playing with his jaw wired shut and leading his Sacramento Kings to a victory over their in-state rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.
At 32-5, the Detroit Pistons have earned the respect of everyone in the NBA. For playing unselfish offense and stingy defense they earn a Hoopie Award.
Thank you to all our listeners for your insightful and encouraging comments. Most of all, thanks for making The NBA Show so successful.
Much love!
Steve
p.s. from Adam: I usually try and put something witty here, but I’m a little drained from celebrating the Seahawks first visit to the Superbowl. Insert your own witicism here.
